Why You Should Purge Your Hot Tub
Why You Should Always Use a Chemical Purge Before Draining Your Hot Tub
If you own a hot tub, you already know how important regular maintenance is for keeping your water clean, safe, and enjoyable. But there’s one critical step that many spa owners overlook when it’s time to drain and refill: using a chemical purge.
At JTS Pools, we’ve seen firsthand how skipping this step can lead to ongoing water quality issues, unpleasant odors, and even damage to your spa system. Let’s break down why a chemical purge isn’t just recommended—it’s essential.
What Is a Chemical Purge?
A chemical purge is a specially formulated cleaner designed to flush out buildup from inside your hot tub’s plumbing lines. Over time, your spa accumulates contaminants like:
- Body oils and lotions
- Soap residue
- Biofilm (a sticky layer of bacteria)
- Dirt and debris
Even if your water looks clean, these contaminants can hide deep within the pipes—where standard sanitizers can’t fully reach.
The Hidden Problem: Biofilm
The biggest reason to use a purge is to eliminate biofilm. This slimy buildup forms inside your plumbing and acts as a protective shield for bacteria.
When you drain your hot tub without removing biofilm:
- Residue stays behind in the pipes
- Fresh water gets contaminated almost immediately
- Sanitizers like chlorine or bromine become less effective
That’s why some hot tubs seem impossible to keep clean, no matter how often you treat the water.
Benefits of Using a Chemical Purge
1. Cleaner, Fresher Water
Starting with clean plumbing means your new water stays clearer and fresher for longer.
2. Improved Sanitizer Efficiency
Without biofilm blocking the way, your chemicals can do their job properly—saving you time and money.
3. Elimination of Odors
If your hot tub has ever had a musty or sour smell, trapped contaminants are often the culprit. A purge helps eliminate those odors at the source.
4. Better Performance and Longevity
Clean pipes reduce strain on your pumps and filtration system, helping extend the life of your hot tub components.
When Should You Use a Chemical Purge?
At JTS Pools, we recommend using a purge:
- Before every drain and refill (typically every 3–4 months)
- When water becomes difficult to balance
- If you notice foam, odors, or cloudy water
- After heavy use or long periods of inactivity
How the Process Works
Using a chemical purge is simple:
- Add the purge product to your existing water
- Run your jets for 15–30 minutes (or as directed)
- Watch as contaminants are flushed out into the water
- Drain the hot tub completely
- Rinse and wipe down the shell
- Refill with fresh water
You may be surprised (and a little shocked) at what comes out during the purge—but that’s exactly the point.
Keep it clean. Keep it simple. Keep it relaxing—with JTS Pools.
